A Daughter's Promise, Novel In November

Writing a Novel in November?

I am. And the novel I’m working on is titled A Daughter’s Promise where 17 year old Sage Buchanon learns that her mother is terminally ill. Her mother is worried Sage and the rest of her family will walk away from the Lord after her death. Sage doesn’t want her mom to worry so she promises her mother she won’t walk way from God. But after her mother passes Sage finds it hard to keep her promise due to the anger she feels toward God. Can Sage keep her promise, or will she disappoint her mother’s memory and walk away from God after all?

On Day 1 I wrote 403 words as I always find it hard to get going on the first day but once I get into the swing of things it gets a bit easier. So as the days progress I’m sure my word count will too.

If your working on a novel this month, what is your title (if you have one) and what is your story about? Feel free to leave a comment or send me an email at mistsofthenorthwoods@gmail.com

I can’t wait to hear what you’re working on and how far you’ve come! Happy writing!

God bless,

Janis

A Daughter's Promise

Cool Sunny Wednesday In Maine

It’s 11:22AM, and I’m looking out the window and listening to a local Christian radio station. I don’t know about you, but listening to music helps get me going in the morning and keeps me going throughout the day. Of course, a little caffeine in my vanilla caramel tea helps too.

So where am I this morning? As I sit down to write, I look over what I have written from previous days. I’m currently working on the outline for chapter one of A Daughter’s Promise. In my outline, I include more than what most authors do which are basically just main ideas. I do the same, but also add dialogue or any details that pop up as I’m writing. I don’t want to forget anything that comes into my head. I never know where that main idea or dialogue will be useful.

In my outline, I put the Novel title at the top, center of the page, then “chapter outline” and then Prologue if I have one and start with bullets for main ideas instead of numbers or letters. The numbers and letters distract me and confuse me the more I go along. Bullets are just easier but still help the ideas stand out.

Beginning Outline for Chapter One

I’m about a quarter of the way through chapter one (title pending), and I look forward to make more progress today, providing I can stay awake. *Yawn* Yeah… we will see how this works. Hopefully, after my sleep study I will have a diagnosis that can be treated and I’ll be able to stay awake for longer periods of time and get more work done. I’d like for this story to be published by the end of next year. I wish I could make concrete goals but in all reality I just can’t. I can only go by how long I can stay awake each day. It sucks, but that’s the way it is right now.

I’m grateful for any progress I make, in spite of my sleepy issues. And I know that God is guiding me every step of the way! I pray He guides you as well.

Any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments or write to me directly at soucieji@gmail.com

Have a great day everyone and happy writing!

General Updates

Where I’m At

Lately, my writing projects consist of poetry, short stories, and a fiction novel based on true events.

With poetry there isn’t much to explain.

The short story I’m working on is called Gnip and the Master of Shefsberry. It’s a fantasy/world travel story where Gnip is an Invisilite a creature that is invisible unless he is lonely and/or sad. Then he is visible to humans such as Bryan the overseer of the Shefsberry lighthouse. I only just started this story so I don’t have much more than that.

Searching for Faith, is a fiction story I am writing using a couple of big life experiences from my life but putting a fictional spin on them. Sage is 17, the youngest in the family and she takes care of her mother who is battling cancer. Everyone else is in school or at work. She’s the sole caretaker and she is under a lot of stress to keep her emotions in check as she watches her mother deteriorate in front of her each day.

Before her mother gets really sick, her mother asks Sage to promise that she won’t leave God when she passes away. Sage promises, but knows it was what her mother wanted to hear and that Sage was still searching out her faith and how much she really believed about this Jesus character.

Donna, Sages, mother, sees through Sage’s “promise” and throws in conversations about Jesus and to help her daughter see the importance of knowing Christ. These conversations continue until Donna is so weak she can barely talk. She passes away later in the day.

Sage goes through the motions of the calling hours, memorial service, and funeral, but she starts to notice she doesn’t feel right. The longer the days pour on the more she feels the symptoms of both grief and oncoming depression.

In the months following, she sees a handful of doctors and they all say the same thing: she’s depressed from the loss of her mother.

Months roll on, and she doesn’t feel any better. Her father takes her to the emergency room after she harms herself. At the hospital she is fixed up but a social worker is called in and says she needs to admit herself to the mental health ward, or they will admit her. So Sage admits herself.

Basically, Sage goes through months of battling her loss and grief and starts a trial of medications. She gets little relief, when her doctor recommends she try ketamine infusions. She goes in for ketamine infusions but is told she has to try ECT first. If ECT doesn’t work, then they will go to ketamine infusions. She tries ECT a few times but starts to lose her memory, so the doctor stops the ECT treatments. Ketamine is next and Sage notices some much needed improvement. The doctor who runs the ECT/Ketamine department suggests her med manager see if they could get a psych evaluation done.

Once Sage goes through a psych evaluation she learns she has bipolar disorder and is started on lithium. After the medication kicks in, she notices her mood improve greatly and she is better able to function normally. Between the ketamines and lithium she is back on her feet.

But through everything, she was surprised to learn she was pulling on her mother’s faith, which had now become hers. She had realized she was following Jesus no matter where she went and had a longing to leanr more about Him. She picks up her Bible, opens it up to Matthew chapter one, and starts reading the gospels.

She feels her mother’s spirit with her and looks around the room. “Alright, Mom. I know you’re here. Even if only briefly. I’m doing okay now. You don’t have to worry.”

“I admit I was worried about you,” her mother’s spirit appeared.

Sage gasps, not really expecting her mother’s spirit to appear. “Mom! I thought you were in Heaven.”

“I was, but I was allowed to visit you one last time.”

“Oh. I was hoping you could stay.”

“You know I can’t.”

Sage drops her head, “I know.”

“I just wanted to reassure you that you’re headed down the right path. And to keep going that way.”

“What path?”

Donna points to Sage’s Bible.

“Oh, the Bible.”

“Yes. The more you read, the more you’ll learn about the stories and truths I’ve told you. Are you willing to keep reading?”

“Yes, Of course, Mom. I have a thirst for this now.”

Donna smiled. “That’s great. I only wish I could be here to guide and teach you.”

“I know. I wish there was someone I could talk to about this stuff.”

“You have your father. He loves talking about the Bible. He just thinks none of his children are interested.”

“But that’s not true. I have always had a curiosity and love for Jesus. I just wasn’t as active about it because the Bible was hard to understand.”

“What translation are you reading?”

“What?”

“Translation?”

“Oh, it’s the New King James version.”

“That’s why. You have always had a hard time understanding that version. Your grandmother on your dad’s side had an NIV version. That should be easier. Ask your father for it. See if you can understand it. If you can, ask him to buy you your own Bible. That way you can highlight verses, or underline them, and take notes in your Bible.”

“You can do that in a Bible?”

Donna laughed. “Yes, you can.”

“Donna, it’s time to go,” said a deep, calm, disembodied voice.

“What was that?” Sage stood up and looked around the room. “Am I going crazy? First I see you and then I’m talking to you and then I hear another voice.”

“You’re not going crazy. I’m really here and the voice you heard was God’s. I need to go now.”

“God’s voice?”

“Yes. Be good for your father be there for your family.”

“I will. I love you.”

“I love you too, dear.”

Donna disappeared and Sage fell into a puddle of tears.

============

Okay so that is all I have about that story for now. I wasn’t planning on going so long with the dialogue part. lol. I’m not sure where I want to go with the story from there. I have more brainstorming to do. If you have any thought’s, questions, or suggestions, feel free to leave me a comment or send me an email at soucieji@gmail.com

Embrace Your Calling as a Kingdom Writer Today

Hmm… Kingdom Writers, huh? Well, I’m a writer and assuming “kingdom” means the Kingdom of God then yes, I am a Kingdom Writer. I always said that if it weren’t for God, I wouldn’t have the gift of writing. I wouldn’t be able to weave words, as they say.

Kingdom Writers is also a podcast. I discovered it over the last couple of days when looking at other writing podcasts. I wanted to share it with you. CJ and Shelley Hitz run the podcast. They also write their own content, including books, and have their own website.

Okay, so that was a big info dump, but I’m just so excited to share the information with you. If you write for God, I think you’ll enjoy the podcast.

I’m currently reading the book Kingdom Writers: Move Forward In God’s Call to Write. I just started it so I can’t say what it’s like just yet. If it’s anything like the podcast, I know I’ll be encouraged to keep writing. When I’m done with the book I’ll let you know my thoughts.

But for now, I’ll let you check out the links. I’ll let you make the decision for yourself if you’re a Kingdom Writer or not.

Take care and I’ll check back soon.

Reading, The Dawson Brothers

Author’s Update: The Dawson Brothers Editing Process and Literary Influences

I have been busy this past week working on editing the first chapter in The Dawson Brothers. I have made good progress and have almost finished the chapter. I am at the end but had to add in a scene that would make things a little clearer.

My plans for this coming week are to finish the edits on Chapter 1 and move on to Chapter 2.

Along with working on my book, I have been watching Bethany Atazadeh and Shaelin Bishop of Shaelin Writes, both of whom are on YouTube. Bethany is an Indie Author and Shaelin is traditionally published. They both have some brilliant advice.

I will also do some reading in the Bible, and in Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly. She writes YA fiction and adult fiction. When I read, I love to read a little in a nonfiction book in the morning and in the afternoon and evening I will read fiction. I like a little of both worlds I guess.

Are you writing a story? How are you doing on reaching your goals? When you’re finished, do you plan on being and Indie Author, or Traditionally Published Author?

I’d love to hear from you. Please a message in the comments below or send me an email at soucieji@gmail.com

Good luck on your writing and God bless,

JI Soucie

Reconnecting with Writing: Latest Updates and Projects

Where has the time gone? I was surprised to find out over a year has gone by since I posted an update. So much has happened over the last year that has taken me away from this blog as well away from my writing.

But I’m here to say I am back to stay and I hope you’re still with me. And I am sorry for the lag in my posting. From now on I will be posting every Sunday afternoon on the writing, editing, publishing, submitting, or reading I did the previous week.

Here is what has happened lately:

Submitted an story titled “Shadow of Illness” to Chicken Soup for the Soul. The article was about the dream I had when I was 4, where I saw my mother’s gravestone and the last three digits of her death date were the same. My mother passed away from cancer in 1999 when I was 17. I often have dreams that come true and this is just one of those things they were looking for.

Tentative release date for The Dawson Brothers is 2025, only I’m not exactly sure when. I have some editing and rewriting to do yet. When I have a firm release date I will let you know.

July 2024 Camp NaNoWriMo – I worked on a story called A Daughter’s Reflection, for which I set a goal of 30,000 words by the end of the month. I reached  25,400 words. So part one of the story is finished now I just have to start part two.

Coming Up

I am someone who loves paper and books and my bedroom is a testamate to this. It is crazy the piles of books I have and the piles of papers and notebooks I have. There are some days that are idea days where ideas for stories just keep coming. So I grab a notebook and write an idea down. Then I will grab another notebook and write another idea down and so. Yes, I love to write longhand over writing on a computer. Though I do take advantage of both.

My goal is too clean up my writing and digitize my notes. I need to minimize the clutter and free up much needed space. Then it will be organizing my notebooks and journals.

I think that is all I have for now.

Good luck on your creative endeavors and God bless.

The Adventures of Summer and Bun Bun

It has been several months since I have written on this blog. COVID-19 hit and like everyone else our little worlds have been flipped upside down. Our kids were homeschooled so that gave me less time to work on my writing and write on this blog. But I have been able to find some time at night while my husband puts our son to bed. I have time to do some writing, even if it’s only for a half an hour. A little progress is still progress.

So, what am I working on now? As you can tell by the title of this post the title is The Adventures of Summer and Bun Bun. Summer is the name of my daughter and I wrote these eight stories based on my daughter when she was two and while she carried around her pink and white rabbit she called Bun Bun. In the stories they go for a walk, go to church, go to school, go to the beach, go to the dentist, go to the doctor, go to the library, go to the zoo, ride a pony and visit a museum.

Most of the stories are done and just need another run through for any mistakes. The last story I have to write is where they visit a museum.

I am thinking of writing another story involving Summer and Bun Bun where Summer gets a baby brother.

I’m not sure where I’m going to go from there. I have some brainstorming to do.

That’s all for now. Take care everyone and stay safe!

Janis

P.S. Before I forget again, I am planning on having this stories published under my pen name KJ Daniels. I figure it’s an easier name for kids to pronounce.

Camp NaNoWriMo

Doing Well on the Writing Wave

Lately I have been doing well with writing and outline my next book, but not so good with keeping up with my posts for my blog.

I have about 50,000 words on my story Facade but it’s not finished yet, I have the rest of the story outlined and Camp NaNo is coming up in just a few days so I hope to finish the story then. I have no idea how long it will be but I’m curious to find out.

The main character is Wesley who is based off of Elvis Presley. His brother Keith is the older brother who in Elvis’ live did not survive. But the twin brother did survive in my story. Wesley could sing and Keith could not so there was a lot of jealousy in the book. Even though Keith discovered his drawing ability it was not enough for him and he’s so enraged he almost kills his brother. And that is about as far as I’m letting on. lol I don’t want to reveal too much.

That book is called Facade and my next book is called The Forgiving which is turning out to be a Christian fiction book so far. I hadn’t much in my story until I used Rory’s story cubes the original box and the actions box. I now have other ideas and actions to work with.

And I think you may have all heard about James Patterson’s Masterclass well I took that and I have been inspired to change some of my ways. Like go commercial publishing instead of self publishing. So once I have Facade written and edited a couple of times, I’m going to seek a literary agent. Yeah sure I may get rejected several times like 30 or so, but that’s okay. Because other writers have done it before me and made it. I believe I can do it too.

So Camp NaNo here I come and here’s hoping to finish my first fictional story!
