NaNo Prep

NaNo Prep Day 2 – End of Day

Early….very early yesterday morning at around 3:30, I woke up and tried to go back to sleep. I had these ideas for my NaNo story playing in my head. Lines of dialogue, POVs from certain characters, the story layout, a new occupation for a character, and a possible ending! You can imagine how excited I was when just the day before I was drawing a blank. Writer’s block is funny that way!

Now, I have debated several times on whether this story was the one I was meant to work on for NaNo. As you can imagine with little more than a few ideas I didn’t have much of a story, and was tempted to go with a story I had more background and character development for. But yesterday something happened that, to me, confirmed this story currently titled “Lucy from South Hampton” (a better title will come to me at some point), was indeed the story I was meant to be writing for NaNo.

I was at church and after service there was a celebration for a couple who had been married 45 years! They had a beautiful cake, of which, I knew I could have none. I am a Celiac. However, an elderly woman named Marie made a gluten free cake, her first time ever. She used one of Betty Crockers gluten free cake mixes and yes, you would think this would be so easy to do right? Well, if you don’t have an understanding of gluten free flours and how easily they dry out, then even a mix can be botched!

I thanked Marie for making the cake. It was very thoughtful of her. She said, “Well, you know it was my first time. I didn’t know anything about rice flour.”

“You did a great job.”

“Well, it’s a little dry,” she said eating a piece of gluten free cake.

I didn’t say anything, but the cake was dry and bit rough–like sandpaper–on the tongue. (Not that I’ve ever tried sandpaper on the tongue. Eeek!)

I looked at Marie. She is a small woman, a former school teacher, with white hair wearing a bright blue sweater. “I think you did a good job with the cake. It tasted good.”

“It was maiden voyage with it, you know.”

I nodded. But inside I chuckled when she said “maiden voyage”. At that moment, I thought of the maiden voyages the Olympic and Titanic that would be in my story for NaNo. My next thought was, “Yep. I’m supposed to write this story this NaNo-go-round!”

NaNo Prep

Nano Prep – Day 2

So today is going to be my day 2 of NaNo Prep.

I have a beginning to a story, but I’m struggling with a middle and an end. I have a few ideas but I need more. Hmmm…. Boy, howdy! I think I’ve got writer’s block. How ’bout that! If that isn’t one of the most frustrating things to have!

I need more plot and not sure where to go for inspiration or something to kickstart my imagination. I’m working in the early 1900s with the construction of the Olympic and later the Titanic. So I’m thinking, I’ll do some research about that era and maybe read some personal accounts of the tragedy and maybe accounts of those who have lost loved ones. There is bound to be something in there I can draw inspiration from.

What do you do when you have writer’s block? Is there anything you go to that helps get the creative juices flowing?

I’d love to hear your thoughts. Please leave comments below the post.

Thanks and happy NaNo Prepping!

Camp NaNoWriMo, General Updates, highly sensitive person

The Clicking of Keys

The light shines down on me and my husband, both working at our laptops. I’m writing while he is programming an android garden app.

I realized tonight that the last post I had written for this blog was saved in the drafts folder instead of being published. I apologize for that. I’m not sure what happened.

I am still holding down editing jobs and reading, though, a few books may have to be put down for now (and possibly re-read later) because there are some books I need to read for research for one of my books. A couple of my books I’m at various stages of writing are in the creative nonfiction genre, which I have found enjoyable to write. One book is going to be about living as a highly sensitive person, and the other, about my experience as a teenager, caring for my terminally ill mother. I want this second book to be one of, not only sharing my experience, but also be a book that can be encouraging to teens who have lost, or are losing a parent, or parent figure.

I have signed up for Camp NaNo but have not decided which of these books I would like to write yet. I think it may be the second book since that is the one most ready to begin writing. The book about being an HSP (highly sensitive person), still requires a lot of reading, notes, etc. This one will be a while in the making. The first book I will be reading will The Highly Sensitive Person: How to Thrive When the World Overwhelms You, by Elaine N. Aron, Ph.D.

I have also been listening to The Creative Penn podcast hosted by author Joanna Penn (J.F. Penn). I love this podcast. You learn so much about the creative and business side of being an Indie Author. Highly recommend if you are looking for a podcast dealing with writing.

I think that is all for now. Off to read and then to bed. Morning comes quickly!

Book Reviews, General Updates

Editing, Reading, Poetry, And Book Reviews

I am amazed how busy one can become without realizing it. Somehow I have attained three editing jobs, reading, writing book reviews, and I have started writing poetry again. As you can imagine this, and being a mom and housewife, take s a great  deal of my time. I wanted to write a blog post to update you, my readers, to let you know things are okay, just that I have been  so busy I am not able to write the amount of blog posts I would like to.

The books I have been reading are Outlaw Salvation by, William Tasch, which is a Christian fiction novel, Bringing up Girls, by Dr. James C. Dobson, Mastering Creative Anxiety, by Eric Maisel, and The Post Traumatic Stress Disorder  Sourcebook, by Glenn R. Schirraldi, Ph.D. A lot to read at once and normally I read a nonfiction book in the morning and a fiction at night and that is all I will allow myself to read. It’s hard when there is so much you want to read about all at once, and hence, I know have four books all started and all being read at various intervals. I am thinking I will have to pick Outlaw Salvation as my fiction book and then choose a nonfiction book for the morning read. Bringing up girls may be the one I finish first. We shall see!

You can follow me on Goodreads for any updates and reviews on these books. Reviews will also be posted on Amazon.com.

A kindle book I just finished reading to my daughter last night was Tyrannosaurus T-Rex: Amazing Photos & Fun Facts Book for Kids About T-Rex (Kids Knowledge Series), by Deutsche Don Juan. I am in the process of writing a review and will be posting it soon.

That is all I have for now, but hope to be back soon and have more regular updates for you. Have a great day! :)

General Updates

Stepping Back A Bit

Lately, I have had to make the tough decision to step back from writing a bit. I won’t be going as hardcore as I was trying to write, but not getting much done because of stress and not balancing social media very well. Health conditions are also butting in and I am exhausted.

So I am going to step back a bit from social media and blogging, but I will continue to write a little bit of something every day if I feel up to it. Right now, until my health is figured out, I must do this.

I hate to, because I love to write and would love to full time, but it comes a point when something you used to love so much, is now nothing but a stressor. Just means a break for a while and to attack other areas that need attention and the down time will also give me time reevaluate things.

In the mean time, if I do post on this blog. It will be maybe once a month just to update everyone or if I have found something  of interest on writing or a good book. I guess we will see what happens.

God bless!

NaNo Days 22 & 23 – Didn’t & Did

For NaNo Day 22 I didn’t make the word count. I feel asleep at my computer again. This Lyrica is kicking my butt! Just a side effect that is said to go away over time. I hope it does. Just hope it helps with the fibromyalgia pain.

So this morning, the 23rd day of NaNoWriMo, I decided to try writing in the morning instead of the evening. And guess what! I got my word count in!!! Yess! Still have to plug it into the NaNo sit but I’ll do that when I know I am done writing for the day.

Finally in my story, things are getting pretty heated and my main character is about to get the surprise of his life! And it’s not necessarily a good surprise either. It is something that will change his life forever.

Can’t wait to get back to that scene so I am off!

Good luck!

NaNo Day 19 – Slumped Again

Number 19

I didn’t make my word count for day 19! I wrote 759 words which is still much better than nothing. I guess fighting a cold is just wearing me out. I fell asleep at my computer again!!! Grrr!

So yeah, I guess sleepiness is an issue, yet I go to bed and don’t sleep well because I didn’t get my full word count in.

I am wondering if part of the reason I have been falling asleep at my computer is that I am bored, or dread sitting at it and typing. I think I need to change it up a bit and write long hand. Yeah, I did mention it in one of my last posts and did have the intentions of doing it, but never did. This time, I mean it. I have everything set to do so. I have never written long hand for NaNo before so we’ll see how things go.

How are you doing on your word count? Any tips or tricks you’ve discovered to help yourself though NaNo?

NaNo Day 19 – Keepin’ On

Number 19

NaNo Day 19…ugh! My mind is running a big sluggish at the moment. It would seem I caught my daughter’s cold. I’ve had  a sore throat for a few days and this morning when I tried to talk my voice would crack. So I’ve been feeling more run down than usual, but it won’t stop me from trying to reach my word count.

I have dinner to go make, then usual nighttime routine before my writing time begins. Last night both twins made it to Memphis. The unexpected event I had thought was going to happen has not happened yet. Really need to make something happen here.

I feel like my story is dragging a bit before I get to the bigger events. I can’t focus too much on that right now though. That will have to come with the editing later.

I’m off for now. Dinner time!

NaNo Day 18 – Back At It!

Number 18

Here is late afternoon going into early evening. I was short of the minimum word count yesterday but I hope to get some writing done today. I have decided to write long hand for change. There comes a time when you just get tired of staring at a computer screen. At least I do. So I am going to be stepping away for a bit. I’m sure it won’t be long before I am back. You know, the whole internet withdrawal thing. lol.

Seriously though, my story is coming along really well. There is about to be a major scenery change for my characters in which they will not only have to cope, but this change will bring about opportunities in their lives they may not have had otherwise. But a question remains, will one of the twin boys make it to the new place (Memphis), stay behind, or die in an accident before the move? Hmmm. Something I have yet to figure out!

NaNo day 17 – Almost Made It

Number 17

Well, I didn’t make the word count last night.  I wrote just over 1,100 words and went to take a break I was planning to be back from. Ha!!! Guess what…I fell asleep and when I woke up it was after midnight!! Nooooo!!!! Arrrr!

I was so close. Just few hundred words more and I would have made the minimum count. I’m feeling rather bummed right now. I had a personal goal to at least meet the minimum everyday, even if  I was ahead, and I failed to do that yesterday. I really needed to keep this goal because I know next week my daughter ill be off from school and I’ll be cooking some food the day before Thanksgiving and the day of Thanksgiving!

I’m exhausted thinking about it.

Well, I hope I’ll be able to make up that 600 words in addition to the 1667 I’ll have to write for day 18.

For now I have to be off to bed.

Night all.
